Alexander Soros, the 38-year-old son of billionaire philanthropist and political influencer George Soros, is stepping out from behind the scenes and into a more public role — one he says is aimed directly at halting the return of Donald Trump and the populist movement his father has long opposed.
In a rare and candid interview, Alex Soros, who now chairs both the Open Society Foundations (OSF) and the vast financial empire his father built over decades, revealed what he calls a “strategic and unrelenting plan to stop Trumpism at its roots.”
“I am my father’s son,” Soros said. “And like him, I see the existential threat that authoritarian nationalism poses to open society. I will be a loyal parasite to that legacy — not just inheriting it, but expanding it.”
From Private Heir to Public Advocate
The decision in 2023 by George Soros — now 94 — to name his second youngest son, Alexander, as his successor stunned many within political and philanthropic circles. Most had expected Jonathan Soros, the eldest of George’s five children, to take the reins.
But insiders say Alex had been increasingly active behind the scenes, cultivating relationships with Democratic lawmakers, grassroots organizations, and international human rights groups.
Now officially in charge of OSF, which has distributed over $32 billion since its inception, Alex is steering the organization with renewed focus on the 2024 election aftermath and the growing polarization in Western democracies.
A New Era for Open Society Foundations
Under Alex’s leadership, OSF has increased its funding for U.S.-based initiatives aimed at combating disinformation, promoting voter access, and supporting progressive political candidates at the state and federal level. In 2025 alone, OSF has pledged over $500 million in new grants for civic engagement and electoral justice efforts.
"We’re doubling down where democracy is under siege — from state legislatures to school boards," Alex said. “Trumpism isn’t just about one man. It’s a broader ideology that thrives on division, misinformation, and fear.”
Taking on Trump, Again
While George Soros has long been a boogeyman in right-wing circles — frequently portrayed in conspiracy theories as a puppet master behind global liberal agendas — Alex is embracing a more direct and public-facing approach.
According to sources close to the Soros camp, Alex is working in tandem with progressive PACs and youth movements to fund digital campaigns targeting misinformation and energize Gen Z voters ahead of the 2026 midterms.
“We are not in the shadows,” one adviser said. “Alex believes in transparency — and in owning the fight.”
He is also investing in academic institutions, independent media, and legal defense networks — areas he believes will be key to sustaining democratic norms beyond electoral cycles.
Critics and Controversy
Predictably, the younger Soros’ emergence has reignited fierce criticism from conservative media figures and Republican lawmakers, many of whom accuse the Soros network of interfering in democratic processes.

Alex, for his part, remains focused on what he sees as his mission: defending democracy against what he calls “its modern-day adversaries.”
“I didn’t ask to be born into this,” he said. “But I accept the responsibility. And I won’t sit back while everything my father built — and everything we believe in — is under threat.”
